The Chicago
radio world is a little quieter with the passing of
WGN-AM 720 radio legend Bob Collins who was killed in
a plane crash. Share your memories of the man who helped
Chicago wake up, or send your condolences to his family,

I just can't
believe it. People used to tease me back when at 20
yrs old I was listening to AM radio. But Bob Collins
had such a charm in the morning, I never listened to
anyone else over the years. It's going to be very strange
and very sad not waking up to his voice. I've learned
a lot from him and his radio show. He did a lot for
his community and his listeners. My deepest condolences
to his family, friends and co-workers. My prayers are
with you. Heaven is one lucky place now to have such
a great radio host.

Being in the
field of radio & print media, words cannot describe
the loss of Bob Collins. As an avid listener of radio
and all it's formats I can honestly say that Bob Collins
was the type of personality that you always turned to.
His charm and wit was one that made you feel like you
were actually listening to your Father or your Uncle,
hence the name Uncle Bobby. He was family so this loss
is especially hard. We don't know why things happen
the way they do, but Bob left us doing what he loved.
I'm pretty sure right now that heaven is a better place
and God is enjoying Bob just as much as we did for all
his 25 years. God bless and rest easy my friend, you
were the best. BP Northwest Indiana

We are shocked
over this tragedy. We are Harley riders and will always
remember meeting him at the "riders breakfast joint"
on Sundays in Highwood. He was extremely friendly and
was just a Harley Rider out having fun and enjoying
the beautiful day. He will be missed. Our prayers are
with his family.

I flew home
tonight and heard about the passing of Bob. I have listened
to WGN for over 25 years. I remember when Bob came on
the air; early evening I think. The shows were great
and I appreciated his perspective even if not always
agreeing with him. He was an excellent heir to Wally
Phillips and I will miss him for the early morning ride.
My condolences and prayers to his wife and family. Spike
was talking about family this evening and it is very
depressing.

We are transplanted
to California and have just heard the news. We feel
like we have lost a friend. No more will we hear him
read Louis Gizzard's column on Bear Bryant before Mother's
day. Speak so fondly and lovingly of his parents. Or
laugh with such true joy. He made it okay for men of
our generation to say, "I love you, Daddy."

Collins family and to the family's of the other's who
also passed away. Let all of you remember them in your
own way. Prayer will help to ease your pain. T.L. Canada

It was meant
to be that gridlock would come to the radio website
at 720 PM. all of us wanting to find a way to cry. I
first listened to Uncle Bobby ("2 'L's', 1 'O'"on a
cold, snowy day, feeling sorry for myself because I
had teeth pulled. His laughter and the Tyrone Gyndleman
moments were good medicine. I called in, once... ironically
to ask why Black Boxes were called that, when they weren't?
He answered my question most courteously. Callin' him
home, Chicago...Christine, I hold you; Booger, let me
join in your keening; the first voice I hear in the
morning is stilled. Love,Marie and a lot of friends

It is so hard
to believe that he is gone. We will miss that warm gentle
giggle that just let everyone know that the day was
going to be a brighter one, Bob found, and was passing
on, a little humor, to make everyone's day a bit better.
The world will miss him. Our hearts and prayers go out
to all those family's that were touched by this accident.

I'm not a Chicago
native, but my husband is. I "converted" to WGN during
our engagement, and for the last 6 years, Bob has been
a part of our weekday mornings. Bob's show started at
5am, and that's when our alarm went off so that we wouldn't
miss anything. Just two weeks ago at the Cubs convention
we gave Bob a Michigan State Police patch that we had
picked up for him. (he just *loved* the Michigan State
Police. :) You will be sorely missed, Uncle Bobby. Our
prayers and condolences to Christine & Booger, and Mom
& Dad Collins. Frank & Carla Martinek Antioch, IL

In numerous
trips between Milwaukee and Northern Indiana over the
last eight years, I have become accustomed to listening
to the WGN radio family. Bob Collins was one of my "Road
Buddies" that made my frequent trips all the more enjoyable.
My heartfelt condolences to his wife Christine and the
Collins' family, along with his colleagues at WGN.

Bob, I will
sure miss you after these last 25 years. I've listened
to you as often as I could. I set my radio to come on
1 hour before I had to get up in the morning so I could
hear a little more of you. You are the only person on
earth that I would loose sleep over! You made me laugh
and cry, sometimes at the same time. Now I find myself
crying but at the same time, laughing at your memories.
You are entertaining God and the folks in heaven now.
I'll look forward to meeting you again someday. Carol

I offer my sincere
condolences to Uncle Bobbys family and his WGN family.
I am in shock and I will miss him, his infectous laugh,
his wonderful radio show. I felt like he was a friend,
he let us, his listeners feel that way. Bob made my
mornings enjoyable, even being stuck in a traffic jam
was OK because I was listening to his show. We in Chicago
have lost a great man. I will truly miss him. Thank
You Uncle Bobby for the many years of enjoyment you
have provided us, your public and friends.

yell and laugh out loud from 5am - 6am every day for
7 years. My condolences to all. AMs will never be the
same.

Bob Collins
so loved flying he hosted a "Fear of Flying" seminar
for all those people (like my husband) who were afraid
to fly. We so enjoyed his humor during the seminar.
My husband actually flew on an airplane and wasn't all
that fearful because he knew what was happening and
what to expect. Our family will so miss waking up with
Uncle Bobby in the morning. A part of our lives will
be missing from now on. Thanks, Bob Collins, for all
you did for Chicago.

Bob was WGN...
through and through. He was my prime link to the whole
'GN family... made me feel tied to all of Chicagoland
for SO many years. Will miss him in late July at EAA
celebrity stage... spent many a summer in the most inclement
weather, talking aviation and listening to his tales.
Hope to never lose the memory of his contagious cackle!

I can hardly
believe that I will never again hear the voice of Bob
Collins in the morning. I could not drive to work without
listening to him. He was so down to earth and yet I
learned so much from listening to his show. He will
be sorely missed by many people. My prayers are with
his wife, family and dear friends. Thanks Uncle Bob
for all the mornings you cheered me up. Gretchen Johnson

I have no idea
whatsoever what I will do when I get into the car tomorrow
morning...drive to the gas station, grab a cup of coffee,
listen to Bob...WAIT! Mornings will truly never be the
same, whether he be talking TO the candidate or politician,
ABOUT the latest movie or AT those who are critical
about whatever it is popular to be critical about that
day. I, too, am not very far away from the age where
it is "square" to listen to AM. But WGN is part of my
life and world. Though this momentous figure has passed
from our lives, he will continue to be part of us as
long as there is ONE person out there who remembers.
